There’s a lot to say about the theory and practice of endorsing a book, and there are many temptations to cut corners on the craft of it. Some years ago I decided to blurb a lot (when asked), and to hold myself to high standards. I wish I had written more actual book reviews over the years, but blurbing has been, for me, a related discipline. I work pretty hard at writing an endorsement, and while writing the blurb goes quick (some are less than fifty words!), reading the book (at least once) in order to endorse it takes nearly as long as the reading I would do in preparation for writing a full review. I take book endorsement pretty seriously: not in the sense that I have to agree completely with everything in a book before I’ll recommend it, but in the sense that I want my endorsement to be memorable, specific, and apt.
